I can’t think of a better way to spend a Memorial Weekend Day than with a couple of young guys, targets, 22’s and a 410 shotgun. That is exactly where I was this past weekend.
My Grandson Wilson #10 and I were joined by my good friend Ralph Riggles and his son Nolan. We took a short trip to the country where we had permission to shoot in a wooded area. When we arrived we sat in the truck and discussed the rules. I was to be the range master and the range master must be obeyed. I was met with full agreement. We set up a target near an old stump which was backed by a large coulee bank. First we explained to the boys why we set up there, we examined the 22 cartridge and how it works, we discussed how far it would shoot and what damage it could do. The boys were all ears.
They took instruction perfectly; both had been exposed to BB Gun Safety for sometime. They shot the 22 rifle a great deal and the 410 just a few times so as to compare the shot pattern versus the one projectile. After shooting we cleared the firearms and examined a 4x4 that was in the target box so the boys could see just how hard the 22 will shoot.
It was a safe and fun outing we shall all remember and a good start for two young men to a life of safe gun handling. We returned the weapons to their rightful space in the TruckVault and headed for home.
