ATV Aggravation (tell us what you think)
My guess is this writing may not sit well with some readers but what the hell? After a number of years of applying my friend Ben and I drew tags for a Utah Mule Deer Hunt. What we did not know is that the standard procedure for hunting, at least in the area we were in, was to get on your ATV and drive the thing anywhere it would go. This was primarily USFS land with signs posted showing walk in areas only and no wheeled vehicles beyond this point. Our aggravation grew as we would hike to the top of a hill only to find 3 orange clad people sitting on their ATV’s. In one week of hunting we did not see one Utah Enforcement person or one Forest Service Enforcement person.
The good news, these ATV Jockey’s enjoyed very little success as far as we could see. The deer, which there were plenty knew the places even the hardiest ATV rider could not go. Every day Ben and I saw many bucks and some fairly good ones at that. I chose not to shoot but Ben did and bagged a 24” plus 4x4. Of course it took the two of us a day and a half to get it to the truck. That is another story in its self.
I had a good time in Utah but would not go back. Hopefully the Utah Fish and Game and the US Forest Service will take steps to return hunting to hunting and not ripping around on gas burners.
My apologies to responsible ATV Riders and those few hunters that were on the ground.
Regards,
