Turkeys
OK, the alarm goes off and the clock reads 4:00 a.m. and you remember why you are getting up so early. Turkey hunting in Washington’s beautiful Okanogan Valley. Friends Matt and Ron and I joined up with Tanglewood Outfitter's Oren Jensen to hunt strutting, displaying spring turkeys (www.twguides.com). Oren has command of many thousand acres of prime turkey and deer country in a setting as marvelous as you can imagine. Before the sun is up we are in the field blowing crow calls hoping to hear a distant gobble and sure enough the birds are there. The first two days we all hunt with bows and no one has an opportunity at a shot but Matt did have a displaying turkey dance and prance at 9 feet away to impress a plastic hen. I don’t think Matt could have been any more excited if he had arrowed that bird but no shooting lane was available. The last of the 3 days we hunted I took my shotgun rather than the bow, after hearing a gobbler high up the mountain before sun up I headed up the hill and set up to hopefully call him in. After a long conversation he flew from his perch to the ground some 100 yards away, but like a ghost it vanished into the surrounding woods. Ron was successful in his quest, with guide George they were able to call a big tom within 40 yards and Ron dispatched him promptly with his 12 gauge. Like most of us we don’t equate what we bag with the quality of the trip and this was a quality trip. We all look forward to our next adventure together. Regards,
