We arrived at the field we intended to hunt while snow fell fast enough to cover our tracks in short order. Our magnum goose decoys were soon set, our duck decoys out along with our secret weapon, swan decoys made from painted plywood and white garbage sacks. Also added were goose decoys made from black plywood and grey garbage sacks filled with balloons. These move in the breeze and I swear they keep the attention of the geese better than any others. The swan decoys bring flocks of swans to the field giving the following geese a warm and fuzzy feeling. The sky above held several flocks of geese but as happens they were auguring into a field about a half mile away. Every following flock did not give us a look but headed to join the others. Enough was enough; Zach and I climbed from the blind, cleaned the snow from our decoys and headed off to the field where the geese were landing. (We have permission to hunt this property as well). The geese were dead in the center of the field so I sent Zach to roust them out which he enjoyed. We headed back to our blind and our decoys, bunches of geese continued to be seen but paid little attention to us. I decided to give it another 30 minutes and then pickup. 25 minutes later 14 geese turned and came right in; the lead goose was DOA with the first shot and the second goose sailed for 250 yards before hitting the earth. Zach and I headed out, when 20 yards away I sent Zach. Just as he reached the goose it was able to get air born, and clear a fence with Zach hot in pursuit. The goose vanished out of site as did Zach. What seemed like a long time later Zach re-appeared with the goose in his face. He was having a little struggle as the goose was still quite active. Zach was a pooped out pooch when he delivered the goose to hand. We decided that was a good way to end the season, picked up our decoys, slipped the shotgun in the TruckVault and headed for home. The good news…there are fish to be caught and Turkey season opens soon. al
