Many of us have seen the pictures and heard the stories of yesteryear when generations of friends and family shared a fishing or hunting camp. The little ones learned to appreciate the outdoors and to cherish the stories of past adventures told by grandpa or an uncle. Days were just not long enough when there was still a trout to catch, a pheasant to kick out of a fence line or a deer that might cross a clearing. Today’s families often seem too rushed, too frazzled and too separated for these kinds of outings. Then again, maybe not. This last weekend I was invited to join my friend Ralph (pictured above with fish) for a Steelhead fishing trip to the Cowlitz River in southwest Washington. All I knew was that he had a place where he parks his trailer and stays while he fishes. What I found was a bit of yesteryear where family and friends have held onto the old ways. It was wonderfully rewarding. Ralph had been camping and fishing at this spot with his dad since he was a boy. Also sharing the space were fishing buddies from young to old. This group enjoys perfect parity except for the sage advice of the senior members, which was well respected. There was a friendly rivalry between jet sleds, and the rule was serious (but good natured) competition between the Riggles boat, Tingley boat and the Carlson boat. The fishing was not red hot but good enough to be interesting and fun. More importantly, what I really saw was a look at the way our society should be; ageless in design, sharing in fun and chore. We can all help this along by taking our children and grand children and showing them how a sharing society works. This was a very pleasant weekend and a great time to reminisce over how things used to be – and still can be. Thanks Ralph.
