Spring Time in
the Rockies
“Well Worth the Trip”
Near the end of March I traveled to Montana. The journey serving several purposes; one I wanted to see my long time friend Frank Hagel’s Lewis and Clark Exhibit which is on display at the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Interpretive Center. Frank’s eight large paintings capture journey events that took place in Montana. See for yourself just how good these works are at the Hockaday Museum. I must say my old pal sure has a great deal of talent.

The next thing I wanted to do was tie into some big Montana Trout with my brand new T-3 Orvis Fly Rod. Boy oh boy did I test it well. Big Montana Brown Trout were rip-raring and ready to do battle. Frank and I enjoyed some excellent fishing in the Sun River.
Another great spring adventure in Montana is watching game. The Sun Game Range gives anyone interested in getting their vehicle muddy a great chance to see big herds of elk. At one point Frank and I watched what we assumed was at least 300 elk and there could have been 500 elk working their way across a close

hillside, close enough that you could hear them talking to one another. Everywhere you travel you find bunches of mule deer and whitetail deer and bands of antelope.
Oh yes, we also enjoyed a dandy spring blizzard with temperatures in the teens, blowing snow and slick roads. Many a driver found himself sitting in the ditch waiting for a tow truck. What the heck, that is spring on the Rocky Mountain Front.
