Flags
On September 12th of last year, I was as stunned and depressed as any American as I tried to absorb, understand and reconcile the horror of the previous day's attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. I was still working full-time in Washington.

After work on the 12th I walked the short distance from my downtown Washington office to the mall and the Washington Monument. I spent about an hour-and-a-half wandering and taking pictures of the receding sun, the monument and the flags. Just at sunset I saw the sun behind the flags that were flying at half-mast in honor of the victims of the previous day's tragedy. The attached photograph says it all for me. It was one of the saddest days of my life yet one that filled me with new determination to keep those symbols of freedom flying in the face of treachery and challenge to our way of life.

I hope this small observance on my part, in some small way, is as encouraging and uplifting to you as the sight of those flags, with the Lincoln Monument in the background, was to me nearly a year ago. God bless you all and God bless America.
